Open eyes fully shut

Screening of the documentary film about women affected by the #Women_Life_Freedom revolution by the Iranian government, at the Theater House of Jena on 08.11.2024. During the recent protests in Iran, women played an outstanding role in leading and promoting the protest movements. Many of these brave women were at the forefront of the demonstrations, becoming symbols of the fight for social and political change with the slogan "Women, Life, Freedom." However, alongside this activism, women were also subjected to severe forms of violence. One of the most brutal examples of this oppression was the targeting of the eyes of protesting women and young people. Security forces aimed directly at the faces and eyes of young women, not only to silence the voice of protest but also to erase the visual symbols of resistance. Many of these injured women and men have become symbols of courage and resistance against state violence, and their strong presence highlights the deep commitment of women to the fight for fundamental rights and freedoms in Iran. According to conservative estimates reported by ophthalmologists in November 2022, there were 580 confirmed cases of severe eye injuries during the "Women, Life, Freedom" protests in 2022, which followed the death of Mahsa (Zhina) Amini in the custody of the morality police. The actual number of those injured is much higher. The geographic spread of eye injuries across the country and the number of reported cases indicate the systematic crime of these attacks.

This event is organized by Lantern in collaboration with the Theater House of Jena and includes: 1. Traditional Iranian food. 2. A short game related to the film's topic, with a cultural prize of Hafez's Divan in German and two additional prizes. 3. Screening of the short documentary film.
